For the lead synths, you can use TAL U-NO-LX to get some instant chorused Roland Juno character. The first lead is a super-simple sawtooth patch using some slight filter pluck with a quick attack. The second patch, that plays the longer melody lines, uses pulse-width modulation to create a rich string-like sound.
For the lead patch, use just the sawtooth wave with the HPF, cutoff and resonance faders all set to 5, and leave the chorus effect off for a dry sound. Once more, I used RC-20 Retro Color to give the lead synth track a vinyl flavour, aiming to create some subtle detuning and tone loss, which gives the track the same character it would have if it were sampled.
I love all your articles, and so happy you did this one on Tyler. Any chance you could do one on Pilot by Tyler I believe theres an instrumental version he released and would really be interested on how he got those synth sounds and also the mixing

I keep my idealsWe each have our destined livesEverything was rust coming from my bodyA dark past I added to with gustoI threw every last thing awayI was even almost killed by a fate that I had no recollection ofDuring that time when I lived with dead eyesEven so, the fact that I'm alive todayWhat's going onIt means, yeah, that I've still got things to doEven during the days I can't do anything to fixWhat's going onNow that I've recognized that I'm different from other peopleI'll open the crucible of possibilityDreaming, my will's going in opposite directionsI can't fill the space in my heart with a square skyLet's get away from this never-ending nightMaking the future low-res, we avert our eyesFrom the days when we lied about not having anything we wanted to beI keep my idealsWe each have our individual livesThat can be ignited so easily with things like love and dreams and dangerThe gong sounds as we live our destined lives
You readyAre you excitedLet's goOnce you know a part high,You won't say no starlight,You'll know how to enjoy contradictions. If you're dead last, one stepThen drown yourself in water, one stepThat's how easy it is, one step. There's no worth in this endless day. That's how we played until today,Hindering ourselves and the reasons we keep distant.Dreaming, reverse your intentions.Squared sky, unable to fill the gaps with things you love from heartEscape from the endless night. We averted our eyes of the dropped resolution of the future.Let's escape the days of bragging, there was nothing we wanted to be.ODD FUTUREYou need to reap everything, you sow.Influence of black history, increasing limitless.Throwing everything away,I was almost murdered by a unknown fate.Closing my eyes to the time I lived,But, because I'm alive today means...What's going onThere are things you left unfinished.I'm still left in the days where corrections can't be made. What's going onYou can acknowledge, you're different from everyone else. The crucible of potention is opening. The meaning of our tears disappears,Let's save over and again in new daysDo you bestAre you excitedSynapses that everything courses through,I want to do it! Let's escape this black curtain, holding us back.ODD FUTUREDreaming, reverse your intentions.Squared sky, unable to fill the gaps with things you love from heartEscape from the endless night. We averted our eyes of the dropped resolution of the future.Let's escape the days of bragging, there was nothing we wanted to be.I keep my ideals for their lives.Love too, dreams too. They are so dangerous easy to ignite,A gong is ringing for their respective destiny.

In his tracks X uses various genres like Emo, Indie Rock, Hip Hop, 90s R & B, New Metal and EDM. His influences include Nirvana, Papa Roach, Odd Future or Immportal Technique. His sound, which he initially mixed together on his home laptop, is full of raw energy, incredibly direct.
The album begins with a melodic cover of \"Strawberry Swing\" by English alternative rock band Coldplay. Connor O'Neill of The Miscellany News writes that the cover begins the album with \"so much atmosphere you almost melt into it\" and then \"spreads you over an apocalyptic swan song\". The song ends abruptly with the rude sound of an alarm clock, followed by the \"nightmarish\" song \"Novacane\". It has been called a love song of sorts, with influence taken from alternative hip hop group the Pharcyde. Lyrically the track explores a narrative in which the singer meets a girl attempting to pay her way through dental school by working in porn. Ocean meets the girl at Coachella, a musical festival which takes place in Indio, California. Ocean serves as the protagonist in the song, in love with a girl \"so gone on drugs that Ocean, wanting to be close to her, has no choice but to get gone on those same drugs\". The pair get high using dental local anesthetics. Ocean serves as an unreliable narrator.
Several interludes are placed throughout the album, named after video games, such as Street Fighter, Metal Gear Solid, GoldenEye 007 and Soulcalibur. This is reported to give the album a more nostalgic feel; the record is \"held together by tiny interludes named after 1990s video games in which the unmistakable sounds of a cassette player rewinding, fast-forwarding, and stopping are heard\". On the track \"We All Try\", Ocean speaks out against homophobia. According to The Guardian, \"Odd Future's frequent use of the word 'faggot' unsettled liberal stomachs\", and that \"Ocean was brave enough to stand alone once more, declaring on 'We All Try': 'I believe that marriage isn't between a man and woman, but between love and love'. On the same song he reveals his opinion of the pro-choice debate: 'I believe a woman's temple, gives her the right to choose/ But baby don't abort.'\" He obliquely \"announces his support of a woman's right to choose and gay marriage\", both of which are \"hardly typical r&b tropes.\"
Nostalgia, Ultra received widespread acclaim from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the mixtape received an average score of 83, based on nine reviews. Anupa Mistry from Exclaim! called it \"sophisticated\", \"pulsing and expansive\", and wrote that Ocean's \"alt sensibilities\" prove \"musically intuitive\" AllMusic's Andy Kellman felt that Ocean's uniqueness lies in his \"wistful, often self-effacing perspective and numbed, restrained delivery\" rather than his production choices, which he found \"neither exceptional nor particularly left of center\". Steven Hyden of The A.V. Club called the mixtape \"dark, playful, a little tasteless, and absolutely riveting\". Connor O'Neill of The Miscellany News wrote that, \"by funneling [the primary means of R&B decadence] through his diverse and diverging palette, Ocean literalizes both his nostalgic impulses and the odd future of which he is a part.\" The Village Voice's Sean Fennessey called him \"an intuitive r&b stylist, with a firm sense of song structure.\" Rudy K. of Sputnikmusic felt that the mixtape sounds \"so fresh, so real\" for a member from Odd Future and stated, \"With Ocean, it never sounds contrived.\"
With the help of a violinist, drummer, and three keyboardists, 22-year-old Zola Jesus aka Nika Roza Danilova polished up her operatic goth-pop sound without losing an ounce of its industrial enigma. A white stage light was cast solely on Danilova throughout the set, emphasizing this dark artist's more angelic qualities.
On the Facebook wall for last night's True Panther/PopGun showcase, two people griped about the fact that the event was 21+. That's might be because Southeast Londoner Archy Marshall, who goes by King Krule (formerly Zoo Kid), only just turned 17 himself this summer. Marshall's show last night marked his U.S. debut, and while the choice to employ a full band of fellow teens to fill out his gloriously spare sound was questionable, hearing the singer's jarringly raw lyrics and growling vocals while looking at his tiny frame was off-putting in the best way.
Doldrums is one dude from Montreal named Arick Woodhead, who has a strong, high-pitched voice and folds industrial, rave-geared sounds, psychedelia, spoken-word samples, jungle, techno, and ambient noise into slippery, amorphous songs. (It makes a lot of sense that he's buddies with fellow Montreal-based singer Grimes). He did a decent job with a rainy Tuesday night and an early set time at a shitty-sounding venue, and with a few proper releases, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to graduate to Bleepy Bloop Fest at next year's CMJ. 1e1e36bf2d
