Thankfully, age and maturity have served me well and these instances are few and far between. However, recently I found myself in a predicament I thought would not befall me for many years to come. I was red raw, hot, sweaty, breathing heavily through a pain which seemed to be everywhere while simultaneously pushing, shoving and squeezing my bottom half.
I have worn the leggings more than any item I have bought in the last six months. The Spanx go with everything: jumpers, shirts, hoodies, t-shirts and a good dressy top. Paired with heels they make me feel powerfully cool like Debbie Harry, worn with trainers I feel I have the prowess of an Instagram influencer.
As the leggings were no longer on sale at Nordstrom, I used a sign-up code good for 10 percent off to save $9.80 on my purchase directly from the Spanx website. After tax, that brought my grand total to $93.94 (basic shipping is free).
Unlike real leather, you can toss the leggings right into your washing machine for an easy cleaning. Spanx recommends turning the leggings inside out, so that the leather-like coating isn't exposed, before washing to help maintain the quality of the leggings.
The care instructions suggest using cold water for washing, as well as lying them out flat to dry. While I strive to air dry the leggings, there have been a few times they've slipped through into the dryer with other laundry (hey, it happens). I haven't noticed any difference in the quality or the sheen after using the dryer. But, since these leggings are a little on the pricey side, I really should launder them as the care tag recommends.
The Spanx Faux-Leather Leggings live up to the claims. There are certainly plenty of dupes out there, but when it comes to quality, fit, and style, these leggings check all the boxes. They are comfortable, fit great and slim me down in all the right spots, and are a stylish alternative to regular leggings without looking like cheap, fake leather.

Expecting a baby We also have maternity styles with over-the-bump bands that offer support.
The fabric does stretch with your booty, but they passed the squat test with flying colors. I would recommend wearing either a no-show panty or a thong to avoid panty lines if you care about those, but feel free to wear any color underneath. After squatting, I took them upstairs and did a short ride on my trusty stationary bike. The leggings held up far better than I did, and the only thing that wanted to roll down was me, not my waistband.
These patterned leggings are from Wolven, a sustainable legging brand to add to the eco-friendly list. However, before I get into that, I need to share why these leggings made me make a new category just for them.
With full pockets and a happy heart, I ran through the normal tests. The leggings passed the squat test with ease, and like the other pair of Wolven leggings I reviewed, the waistband stayed in place during all sorts of movements, with no dreaded roll-down when sitting. I have zero complaints with these, except I do wish that I also ordered the Zephyr Crossover Pocket leggings too, which combine the amazing waistband that I reviewed above with the pockets on these.
These leggings surprised me in more ways than one. I had seen them all over social media and worn by celebrities and so I assumed they were super expensive and not size-friendly. Both of those assumptions were wrong and these blew me out of the water.
While the original leggings are the viral SEASUM scrunch butt pair, we wanted a more wearable and less honeycomb pair, and we found that and more with Cute Booty Lounge. I opted for one of their more basic styles, the Nudey Booty Lifestyle Crossover Booty leggings in a plain black color. They still stand out however, with an insanely cool and slimming mesh waistband and of course, the ruching in the back up the seam.
The Spanx faux leather leggings do exactly as they claim when it comes to sucking everything into place. In my opinion, they make your silhouette more sleek and firm looking. Spanx was founded as shape wear, so it is not a surprise that they hold you in, while making your legs and booty look great too. As far as the shaping features go on the Spanx faux leather leggings, you will have a hard time beating it.
The lining of the Spanx leggings is very silky and it feels really nice on the inside. It is soft and I think it probably helps you feel like things are smooth. While the leggings are tight, as they are intended, they are still really comfortable. I can see what makes them easy to style. You can dress them up or down and they are super versatile. For reference, I wear a small in the Spanx. I could possibly size down, but I want to be able to breathe, LOL!
To be completely transparent, I purchased three other pairs of faux leather leggings in 2019. I was determined to find some at an affordable price point. In my experience, there is usually a way to look fashionable and on trend, without breaking the bank. I have always been a bargain shopper and I love to create looks that others can attain and feel confident in wearing too. Comparison is hard in our society and everyone tells you what you need to buy to be fabulous.
I highly recommend these leggings if you are looking for a high quality dupe. I have a hard time telling them apart in the side by side photos. And when I polled some people, many of them chose the Express leggings over the Spanx leggings! The Express vegan leggings are my favorite Spanx dupe, hands down!
In close, if you have the means to buy the Spanx faux leather leggings, they offer the best in shaping and holding everything in place. However, if you are looking for some more affordable options, they ones I mentioned above are great too. Below is a side by side comparison of the Spanx faux leather leggings and the Express vegan leather leggings. Can you tell them apart
I wore the faux leather leggings until I was about 7 months pregnant (under my bump) until they became a little bit too tight around the bottom of my bump. Then I got the Mama Maternity leggings and almost cried because they were so comfortable. SO, if you are pregnant, I would say invest in the maternity ones as you could wear them throughout your entire pregnancy AND after. They stretch to go over the bump and are a thicker material so you feel sucked in without it being too tight on the bump.
Spanx leggings have earned their own share of fans because they feature the same comfort and flattering look of the famous shapewear, but take everyone's favorite form of pants-that-aren't-really-pants.
We tried a few pairs of Spanx leggings to see for ourselves what the big deal was and came away impressed with their fit, quality construction, and flattering style. You can read more about our experiences and shop all of Spanx's leggings below.
For both stylistic and functional, breathability purposes, I love leggings with mesh details or panels, so I was immediately drawn to this pair. They have a lengthening and slimming mesh stripe down each leg that somewhat mimics the popular side stripe pant look of the moment, but has its own unique effect.
Your legs and butt will look great in these leggings because the fabric compresses and hugs your curves, but they'll also feel surprisingly comfortable the whole time. They're stretchy, and though I wouldn't work out in them, they easily adapted to the unexpected squats and light jogs that can be required during an active day in the city.
I'm firmly in camp \"leggings as pants,\" and this semi-high-waisted pair has everything going for it. The extreme opacity means I never have to worry when I bend over to pick something up (which is often, I have a cat and a slippery phone), and the seamless construction is incredibly smoothing and comfortable. There's no elastic strip in the waistband, so there's no digging. The waist is basically just a continuation of the leggings themselves.
The Every-Wear leggings are flattering and slimming, and surprisingly thin enough to wear all day comfortably. The four-way stretch lets you move around unencumbered. The design is smart: the absence of a center-seam and a waistband-free construction makes the transition from what is essentially shapewear to a more natural second skin (and no muffin top). It hit at my natural waist, and the seams in back work both functionally and as a kind of slimming and uplifting contour.
With smoothing technology, 4-way stretch, sweat-wicking fabric, and pockets, these are bound to become your favorite pair of leggings. Choose between Very Black or Bark. Every.Wear Knockout Leggings, Originally $110, Now $77, Spanx
The Booty Boost Active leggings are made with the lift and bum sculpting technology that you know from SPANX. They're built to support every workout from yoga to marathon running, making them the go-to most supportive act
